Who Am I and Why Should You Listen to Me?
About 10 years ago I became interested in the field of learning disabilities, specifically dyslexia, when my oldest son began having difficulty learning to read. Through a series of events, I attended a seminar on dyslexia. After learning the warning signs of dyslexia I realized that my son wasn’t "slow" or "immature" or "unmotivated," he was struggling with reading, writing and spelling due to an undiagnosed learning disability, dyslexia.
Through learning how to help him overcome his reading challenges, I learned how to tutor kids with dyslexia using a specialized reading program. From there I became a Certified Professional Tutor and a Dyslexia Testing Specialist. I opened a tutoring and testing business called Learning Success. This business has been open since 2001 and has served many dyslexic children and adults. An important aspect of my business has been working with parents.
My desire is to help moms and dads learn more about dyslexia and to educate them how to best serve the needs of their children. I hope to present information on dyslexia in "parent friendly" terms so moms and dads can best understand how to help their child.
My Son Was Frustrated, and I Didn’t Know How To Help Him!
When my son Caleb was 9 he was really struggling to read, and I was frustrated! You’d think that a child’s academic problems would only affect the child. However, the reality is that the whole family feels the effects and suffers as a result.
My son seemed to be bright and gifted in many areas, like math, but his reading was slow and inaccurate and he couldn’t keep up with his peers. Despite trying several well-packaged phonics programs, he couldn’t seem to progress past a 2nd grade reading level. In the back of my mind, I kept wondering, “Could his difficulties be due to Dyslexia?”
I Decided To Take Action To Save My Son!
The word Dyslexia seemed to be a big, scary term that would indicate something was terribly wrong with my child. Caleb seemed normal enough, just slow in reading, writing his thoughts down on paper, spelling, and handwriting. He also experienced difficulty memorizing common facts. Things such as memorizing his phone number and address, and the details necessary to pass tests in school were very difficulty for him. He also had trouble learning to tie his shoes and telling time on a clock with hands was a challenge. Finding the correct words while speaking also seemed to be difficult for him. I sought advice from many professional educators and they all told me not to worry, he was just a “slow learner” and he would “outgrow” his struggles.
But I realized my child wasn’t “unusual” or “slow;” he was Dyslexic! I felt relieved, like a huge mystery had been solved.
Not Only Are There Real Answers, But He Can Succeed!
Throughout history, many of the individuals who left their mark on our world also struggled with reading, writing, and spelling. Artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, and Ansel Adams used their creative abilities to give us beautiful works of art.
Famous dyslexic politicians throughout the ages not only helped shape our world. Politicians such as Winston Churchill, Benjamin Franklin and John F. Kennedy are just a few of well-known public officials who are now considered dyslexic. Many people with Dyslexia also excel in the world of sports. Bruce Jenner, Magic Johnson, Nolan Ryan, and Terry Bradshaw are just a few of our sports heroes from the past who have not excelled academically, but have excelled on the court or on the field.
Our movie and television screens are also filled with people who struggled in school but were able to overcome these challenges by entering a field where they could express their creativity. Actors such as Tom Cruise, Henry Winkler, and Whoopi Goldberg have been very vocal about the academic challenges they faced while they were growing up. However, there have been scores of other famous actors and actresses who have also shared these same difficulties. Keira Knightly, Patrick Dempsey, Olando Bloom, Jay Leno and Anthony Hopkins are a few of the many famous actors who have overcome their difficulties and succeeded in spite of their reading challenges.
