Lindsay Wagner is Dyslexic

Monday, November 24th, 2008

The latest entry to our "Famous Dyslexics" eBook is Lindsay Wagner.  You may remember her as the Bionic Woman from the 1970’s hit T.V. show, or from her current Quiet the Mind and Open the Heart workshops.  But we are greatful to her for her comments in the Yorkshire Post which stated "Lindsay struggled at school despite being exceptionally bright. Years later, in her mid- 30s, while visiting a school for children with dyslexia Lindsay recognized herself.

"No-one really knew about dyslexia when I was at school. On one hand I was being told that I was really bright, and on the other being told I was lazy and should try harder, but I was trying as hard as I could, I just couldn’t make sense of the words."

But it’s because of this undiagnosed dyslexia that Lindsay got into acting.

We are always excited to find these stories of personal success and in her case, such tremendous contribution to the world from people with dyslexia!

Dyslexics have above average intelligence.

Friday, October 31st, 2008

"Dyslexics often have average or above average intelligence" is a quote from a recent article in The Barbados Advocate.  To read the full article go to: http://www.barbadosadvocate.com/newsitem.asp?more=lifestyle&NewsID=127

"Individuals with dyslexia have average or above average intelligence, yet may have poor academic achievement. They might be labelled lazy, dumb, and careless and as a result, may start to see themselves as being that way. Some dyslexics may show a dislike of reading and as a consequence may compensate by developing interpersonal expertise, verbal communication and leadership skills."

This is a good article with only some minor errors.  The key I want to point out is that many people with dyslexia have above average intelligence and simply don’t learn the way most other people learn.  The optimal learning environment is not a classroom filled with a bunch of other people all trying to learn something the same way.  Thus they compensate to try to keep pace with their classmates and the result of their compensation is often superior interpersonal skills, communication skills, and leadership skills.

This is why dyslexia is a blessing.  This is why many of this worlds greatest inventors and leaders have been dyslexic!

Successful Because of Dyslexia!

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Some people are afraid to "label" someone as dyslexic.  In fact we have an article on this website that addresses that issue.  There is a distinct difference between "labeling" and "diagnosing" dyslexia.  All that aside, regardless of weather someone is ever formally diagnosed as dyslexic the nature of someone with dyslexia often drives them to success.

Have you ever wondered why many of the worlds most successful and influential people have been dyslexic?  I believe that is because when you have dyslexia you grow up using your other strengths, talents, or even senses to succeed.  Often those poor people without dyslexia sail right on through school and into work without making waves, without stirring the pot, or asking "why?"

People with dyslexia are naturally more inquisitive, more creative, are better at compensating and adapting to new and different ways of doing things.  Therefore as adults when we are freed from the moorings of "the way things are done" we are able to let our creativity freely flow into business, arts, politics, law, … whatever field you want.

I want to hear your stories of success.  If you’re dyslexic and have overcome anything … Let us know about it … post your comment!
